Headquartered in Fargo, North Dakota, logistics provider Magnum Transportation manages Truckload, LTL, Dedicated, Warehousing, and Logistics through a network of terminals across ten states. Founded in 1978, Magnum combines the scale of a growing fleet with the values of a family-owned business. With over 1,600 employees and a focus on technology, safety, and service, the company continues to evolve to meet modern transportation demands. Magnum is comprised of five separately incorporated divisions, allowing for tailored, customer-first solutions, making them a trusted and innovative partner in supply chain logistics.
By 2022, Magnum found itself at a crossroads. The company’s existing telematics and video solution was no longer keeping pace with its safety and operational demands. Video was often not retrievable during critical crash investigations, and the tools to identify risky driver behavior were outdated and ineffective.
The cost of maintenance and downtime from unreliable equipment was rising, and internal risk management leaders raised serious concerns. Bryce Allickson, VP of Human Resources and Risk Management, explained, “We had gotten to a point where it was time to find something new.”
Magnum’s leadership realized it needed a more advanced, responsive, and scalable platform to support both immediate safety needs and long-term strategic goals.
Magnum conducted a comprehensive review of several industry-leading providers, including Netradyne, SmartDrive, Samsara, Bendix, Isaac, Motive, and Lytx. After narrowing the list down to two finalists, Lytx and Netradyne, the team ultimately selected Netradyne’s Driver·i platform.
The deciding factors were clear: Netradyne offered superior AI capabilities, enhanced driver privacy features, real-time video access, and a user-friendly app that enabled proactive driver engagement and positive feedback. “It just made sense,” said Christopher Krabbenhoft, Driver Development Coordinator. “Netradyne reduced the effort to address risky driving by focusing on the real issues.”
The onboarding process was smooth and well-supported. Netradyne’s Customer Success Team, played a hands-on role in training, installation, and ongoing education for both shop personnel and drivers. Their on-site presence made a difference. “When you’re not the only one delivering the message, when it comes from the vendor, it builds trust,” said Krabbenhoft.
Since adopting Netradyne, Magnum has seen measurable improvements across safety, operations, and driver engagement. One of the most impactful outcomes was real-time crash exoneration: in a serious incident, side camera footage from Netradyne cleared a wrongly detained driver within 20 minutes, an outcome that would have taken days or even weeks with the company’s previous system.
The technology also contributed to a significant reduction in open claims. At the start of 2024, Magnum had 25–26 active litigation cases from prior years. Within 18 months of using Netradyne, that number dropped to under 8, reflecting a dramatic decrease in crash-related legal exposure.
Driver behavior also improved notably. Those actively using the Driver·i app showed a 95 to 100-point increase in their GreenZone® Scores, Netradyne's proprietary driver safety metric, supported by Magnum’s implementation of an eight-week coaching program designed to reinforce positive habits through consistent engagement.
Operational efficiency has increased through virtual self-coaching tools and targeted video alerts, drastically reducing the time managers spent reviewing footage. This allows them to focus on higher-risk behaviors and customer support.
Driver engagement has also risen, with monthly rewards and real-time visibility into safety performance creating a culture of accountability and pride. One long-time driver celebrated being ranked the #1 safest driver in the company, an achievement that helped foster wider buy-in across the fleet.
Risky behaviors such as harsh braking, U-turns, and seatbelt violations have declined, thanks to data-driven coaching powered by side and inward-facing cameras and vehicle data insights. Real-time video uploads have also streamlined the claims process, enabling faster internal investigations and quicker insurance decisions, saving both time and money.
Netradyne’s seamless integration with platforms like Idelic, Trimble, Maven, and Platform Science made safety data more accessible and actionable across departments.
Perhaps most importantly, Magnum has seen a cultural shift from pure compliance to performance-driven safety. By focusing on positive reinforcement of safe driving, self-awareness and continuous improvement rather than enforcement alone, the company has empowered its workforce to take ownership of their safety and contribute to a smarter, safer fleet.
Looking ahead, Magnum plans to expand its use of Netradyne analytics through more advanced dashboards and interfaces. These tools will allow leadership to slice data in new ways, aligning safety goals with specific operational strategies across terminals.
The company is also exploring additional automation through its existing integrations, particularly within Idelic, to support HR, training, and compliance tracking.
As Krabbenhoft explained, “The next step is really refining how we use this data to lead. This isn’t about watching every video, it’s about understanding behavior, seeing the trend lines, and driving change.” When asked what advice he would offer to other fleets, Krabbenhoft emphasizes the importance of transparency and culture when adopting a system like Netradyne. “This will shine a light on your operation,” he said. “Be ready to have hard, honest conversations, not just with your drivers, but with your managers, too.”
His advice is simple but critical: Don’t try to do everything at once. Focus on behaviors, not micromanagement. Use the data to educate and reward, not punish. And above all, celebrate the wins.
“When you hand a driver a plaque and say, ‘You were caught on camera avoiding a crash, thank you,’ that kind of recognition spreads. That’s how you build buy-in. That’s how you change culture.”
