J.L. Rothrock, Inc. is a family-owned transportation company known as “The Dependable Motor Carrier,” serving customers across the United States for more than 80 years. Operating in 20 states with a fleet of 70 vehicles and more than 70 drivers, the company provides dry van truckload and intermodal drayage services. Supported by in-house maintenance and a dedicated operations team, J.L. Rothrock prioritizes reliability, efficiency, and safety while building long-term customer relationships rooted in trust and performance.
At the helm of safety and driver performance is Kelby Schiller, Safety Director, responsible for driver recruiting, safety oversight, insurance and accident claims, and implementation of in-vehicle technology.
Before adopting video telematics, J.L. Rothrock was looking for ways to further improve safety and manage insurance risk.
“We wanted to take control of our safety and reduce costly claims,” Kelby said. “Our insurance company recommended adding cameras to the fleet, which gave us a clear path forward.”
While the company had previously used ELD and engine data to track hard braking, speeding, and similar events, it lacked video visibility into critical risky driving behaviors. These included distracted driving, intersection violations, and the full context of on-road incidents. Without that context, the safety team struggled to coach drivers effectively or defend against contested claims.
“Before cameras, it was a lot of ‘he said, she said,’” Kelby explained. “We lacked objective video context about distractions, running stop signs, or what drivers were dealing with every day.”
J.L. Rothrock selected Netradyne to provide real-time visibility and actionable insights into driver behavior. To ensure smooth adoption, a pilot program launched cameras on 10 newer trucks driven by experienced drivers with clean records.
“We didn’t want to make a sudden change to the entire fleet,” Kelby said. “We told the drivers exactly what we were doing, reviewed the data together, and listened to their feedback.”
Drivers initially noticed the dual-facing cameras but quickly became accustomed to them as part of normal operations. After three months of analyzing results and feedback from drivers and coaches, Netradyne was deployed across all 70 vehicles, with ongoing communication, coaching, and monthly scorecards reinforcing safe driving habits.
Netradyne’s platform became central to day-to-day safety operations. Kelby uses automated alerts to flag high-risk behaviors in real time, engages drivers through the mobile Driver•i App, and leverages monthly scorecards to drive continuous improvement and coaching.
With Netradyne fully integrated, J.L. Rothrock reports several measurable safety and operational gains, includingt:
One early accident demonstrated the value of video telematics. A nearly head-on incident caused by another vehicle’s loss of control. Netradyne footage showed J.L. Rothrock’s driver was attentive, traveling at the speed limit, and braking appropriately.
“We saw exactly what happened, and our driver did everything right,” Kelby said. “I can’t imagine what that situation would have looked like without the cameras.”
To reinforce positive habits, J.L. Rothrock created incentive programs like the “900 Club” for drivers who consistently score high on GreenZone scores, fostering both healthy competition and peer-supported improvement. This approach led to strong driver acceptance during the initial rollout across a 70+ driver fleet.
J.L. Rothrock plans to expand proactive coaching and defensive driving strategies, using Netradyne insights to sustain safety excellence and improve fleet performance.
Kelby’s advice for carriers considering video telematics is straightforward, “If you’re on the fence, just do it. You gain clear incident evidence, improved driver safety, and a product you can rely on.”
By earning driver buy-in and using context-rich video evidence, J.L. Rothrock continues to strengthen proactive coaching, cut claims, and support long-term fleet success.
