Caffey Distributing Company (“CDC”) is a privately insured beverage distributor operating across multiple locations, including Greensboro and Charlotte, North Carolina. As the preferred wholesale partner to over 40 suppliers and 2,300 retailers, CDC delivers more than 4.5 million cases annually. These partnerships place CDC in the top 1% of beer wholesalers nationwide by volume and size. With a fleet serving convenience stores, bars, and restaurants, the company prioritizes driver safety, operational efficiency, and workforce engagement.
CDC faced several challenges that put both its drivers and business at risk. Auto liability claims were high, and driver turnover was a persistent concern. Their previous fleet management system frequently failed to capture reliable evidence during incidents, with cameras often losing footage at critical moments.
"At the time of the accident, we would have the video recording up until the point of impact, and then the footage disappeared. The camera turned back on after the accident. This happened twice within a very short period of time,” explained Samuel Spicer, CDC’s Director of Safety and Risk Management.
The outdated technology, coupled with limited engagement tools for drivers, left CDC searching for a more robust, intelligent solution that could provide reliable, verifiable footage and foster a positive safety culture.
After evaluating several providers, including Samsara, CDC selected Netradyne. The platform’s AI-driven insights and gamification features encouraged driver engagement through rewards and competition rather than punitive measures. Netradyne also allowed CDC to lease equipment, making the solution more cost-effective. Onboarding was smooth and supported by a dedicated technical specialist, who guided the team through the platform’s features and ensured a seamless transition from their previous system.
CDC implemented the Driver•i platform quickly, starting with a two-truck trial at the Greensboro location. Following a full installation in Charlotte in July 2024, all vehicles in their fleet were fully transitioned by October.
The platform was integrated across operations, warehouse, and finance departments, providing real-time insights for tracking, routing, and scheduling. For operations and warehouse teams, Driver•i is tied into routing solutions to predict truck arrival times, enabling orders to be staged efficiently. Aligning the fleet tracker with delivery schedules allows dispatch to be organized around each division’s delivery teams, improving workflow. The finance team uses the platform to track drivers, communicate estimated return times, and quickly resolve discrepancies. Across departments, Netradyne’s fleet tracker, geofencing, in-cab alerts, and configurable notifications have become central to daily operations.
"We've been able to integrate it across every department, creating a level of efficiency that continues to grow,” said Spicer.
CDC leverages Driver•i to drive proactive coaching and continuous driver development. Weekly and monthly tracking allows leadership to rank drivers by department, monitor high-impact events, and track driver stars over a rolling period, informing incentives such as “Driver of the Month” or “Driver of the Quarter.” While app use isn’t required, over 90% of drivers voluntarily participate, sharing videos and insights that previously required time-intensive in-person coaching.
"The coaching has been great, less corrective action and more coaching. You get a higher morale and a more engaged workforce,” said Spicer highlighting the positive cultural impact of the platform.
The platform has also proven invaluable in incident resolution. In one hit-and-run case, footage allowed CDC to identify the responsible party, recover $6,000 in damages, and clear the driver of liability.
At the Greensboro location, Driver•i has improved safety, compliance, and retention. Distractions have decreased, violations have dropped, and seat belt compliance has reached 100%. By providing real-time feedback and clear visibility into driver behavior, Driver•i has helped create a safer, more accountable, and engaged driving culture.
The impact of Netradyne was immediate and measurable. Key outcomes include:
CDC plans to continue leveraging Netradyne to strengthen its culture of safety and operational excellence. The company aims to expand real-time coaching and gamification to sustain driver engagement, further integrate Netradyne data with internal scheduling and finance systems, and refine alert configurations to enhance predictive safety measures.
"Establish trust through transparency with your teams. Let them know exactly what it's being used for. This is a tool to help us get the best out of you, to protect you, and provide you with everything you need to be safe and successful,” concluded Spicer.
