Comparing Netradyne’s automated methods& their impact onfleet safety
Many fleet safety programs rely on fragments: isolated driving events, sporadic video clips, or only the most severe violations.

These snapshots tell part of the story, but not enough to truly understand driver behavior so fleet managers can coach effectively. Without full context, knowing who needs help, what kind of support to provide, or whether coaching is working is difficult. This uncertainty creates constant stress for safety managers, who know accidents can be prevented but don’t have the tools to do so. In the worst moments, it means making heartbreaking calls to families or facing tough conversations with executives about yet another avoidable crash.

Netradyne helps solve that problem with the Driver•i platform, which captures and analyzes 100% of driving time, not just exceptions. At the core of the platform is the GreenZone Score, an objective, real-time measure of overall driving behavior. Generated automatically from comprehensive video and AI analysis, the GreenZone Score powers Netradyne's coaching tools, which deliver timely, personalized feedback based on a full view of each driver's performance. This helps safety managers identify trends, target the right drivers, and coach with greater consistency and precision.

This article explores how different coaching methods influence GreenZone Scores—and how improving those scores can drive better business performance. It highlights which approaches are most effective and how fleets can use data-driven coaching to improve safety, reduce costs, and support long-term driver success.

Coaching methods compared: summary of results.

To evaluate the impact of different coaching approaches, Netradyne analyzed GreenZone Score changes across its customer base by comparing scores from the 7 days before and 7 days after each coaching session. This analysis uses data from 100% of recorded driving time, providing a comprehensive view of driver behavior.

The results reflect the average improvement in driver performance following a coaching session, ranging from a baseline +0.8 point increase with in-cab audio alerts alone—representing drivers who received no follow-up coaching—to a +25.9 point increase with recommended coaching.

Name

Purpose

Duration

Baseline (in-cab audio only)

Real-time audio alerts only; no follow-up coaching.

+0.8 pts

Managed Coaching

One-on-one sessions led by a manager using video and driving data.

+5.9 pts

Virtual Coaching

Self-guided coaching completed by drivers via the Driver•i app.

+16.7 pts

Recommended Coaching

Automated sessions assigned to low-performing drivers based on risk.

+25.9 pts

These gains represent meaningful changes in driver behavior, such as fewer rolling stops, less hard braking, and improved attentiveness—factors that directly influence safety outcomes and operational efficiency.

The table below summarizes the results, with a brief explanation of each coaching method. A more detailed breakdown follows in the next section.

Coaching methods explained.

Baseline: In-Cab Alerts Only

This group includes drivers who received real-time audio alerts but did not participate in any follow-up coaching. These alerts provide immediate feedback for behaviors such as hard braking or rolling stops, and help raise awareness in the moment.

On average, this group saw a modest +0.8 point increase in GreenZone Scores, suggesting that alerts alone have a limited and short-term impact. Without context or reinforcement, many risky behaviors go unaddressed.

While automated, these alerts differ from coaching. Coaching combines data with structured follow-up and behavior-specific feedback, key elements missing from this baseline group.

Managed Coaching

In this approach, safety managers review video clips and driving data, identify areas of concern, and lead one-on-one sessions with drivers. Managed coaching accounts for 68.7% of all coaching sessions and delivers an average +5.9 point increase in GreenZone Scores.

This method creates opportunities for personalized feedback and dialogue, but it also relies heavily on time, staffing, and consistency across managers. Compared with automated approaches, the improvements are more modest.

Virtual Coaching

Delivered through the Driver•i mobile app, virtual coaching allows drivers to review their performance independently and complete coaching sessions on their own time, without manager involvement.

This self-directed approach resulted in a +16.7 point increase in GreenZone Scores. It’s a scalable way to keep drivers engaged, especially for fleets with limited safety staff or high driver turnover.

Recommended Coaching

This method uses Netradyne’s solution to identify drivers in the bottom 20% of GreenZone Scores and assign them coaching sessions automatically in the app. These sessions are prioritized based on risk, allowing safety managers to focus on the drivers who need the most attention.

With a +25.9 point increase, recommended coaching had the largest impact of any method. Targeted interventions at the right time—and for the right drivers—can dramatically improve performance.

Score gains & what theymean for fleets.

Higher GreenZone Scores are strongly associated with safer driving and fewer incidents on the road. Even modest gains can lead to measurable improvements in fleet performance.

Internal analysis reveals:

Every 50-point improvement in a fleet’s Green Zone Score corresponds to a 13–15% reduction in accidents per million miles (APMM).

In a study of two fleet groups (one with 100 fleets, the other with 50), Netradyne customers improved their Green Zone Scores by an average of 150 points within the first year.

A fleet using the Driver•i platform is likely to experience a 30%+ reduction in accidents per million miles (APMM) —in its first year alone.

These improvements translate to significant safety gains and operational benefits for fleets, including:

  • Lower insurance premiums
  • Reduced legal exposure and claims costs
  • Less vehicle downtime and maintenance disruption
  • Stronger CSA scores
  • Increased driver retention

In an industry where safety metrics directly affect operatingcosts and risk, these results deliver real business value.

Recommendations forcoaching strategy.

Based on Netradyne’s findings, fleet leaders can consider the following actions to improve driver performance and reduce risk:

Prioritize virtual and recommended coaching

Both methods consistently delivered higher gains than manager-led sessions, with fewer demands on time and staffing.

Use the Driver•i mobile app to build ongoing engagement

Encouraging drivers to engage with the app for self-directed coaching can amplify score improvements and foster proactive safety habits.

Implement data-driven coaching strategies

Using performance analytics to identify at-risk drivers and deliver targeted coaching helps optimize safety interventions and maximize GreenZone score improvements.

Make coaching consistent

One-time sessions aren't enough. Fleets see stronger, sustained results when coaching is regular and built into daily or weekly workflows.

Turning insight into impact.

Automated coaching delivers the biggest score improvements, but the system’s value doesn’t stop there. Netradyne also helps fleets recognize and support the drivers who are already doing things right.

With real-time GreenZone Scores and app-based visibility, managers can check in on high performers, keep them motivated, and reinforce positive habits. The Driver•i app even lets drivers see how they stack up against others, turning coaching into a friendly competition. Companies can take it a step further by offering rewards or running driver competitions, making safety something drivers actively strive for.

That kind of engagement creates a shift from a culture of correction to one of recognition. Coaching becomes more collaborative, drivers become more receptive, and safety becomes part of the everyday mindset. This, in turn, translates into drivers feeling valued and their families knowing that they are safer while on the roads.
