The safest fleets are the hardest to beat

At 200 mph, a race car driver has milliseconds to process conditions, make adjustments, and execute. Every decision matters. There’s no room for delayed information, incomplete visibility, or hesitation.
Commercial fleet drivers may not be racing around a track, but the demands are remarkably similar. Every day, drivers navigate changing road conditions, unexpected hazards, tight delivery schedules, and high-value cargo.
This week, Netradyne is heading to NASCAR San Diego in our hometown, where fleet leaders, safety professionals, and transportation innovators will come together around a shared belief: the safest fleets are the hardest to beat.
What racing and fleet operations actually have in common
Winning race teams operate on precision. Every pit stop, race-line adjustment, and strategic call is informed by real-time telemetry flowing back to the crew chief.
Commercial fleets operate the same way.
Drivers make hundreds of decisions every shift. Safety managers monitor performance across thousands of miles.Dispatchers, operations teams, and fleet leaders rely on data to understand what’s happening on the road and where support is needed.
Both environments are unforgiving. A delayed response to a hazard or a missed signal can quickly translate into higher costs, vehicle damage, and injuries.
In fact, this dynamic extends beyond motorsports. Military operations, racing organizations, and commercial fleets all share the same operational DNA: fast, accurate decision-making under pressure.
In these environments, to view safety as simply a constraint is to overlook its power as a performance lever. After all, not only does driver behavior account for an estimated 15–30% of fuel consumption variance, it also directly influences safety outcomes.
Put simply, the same habits that reduce risk also improve efficiency, consistency, and ROI.
The fleets that compete at the highest level
The strongest proof of this philosophy comes from the fleets putting it into practice every day.
This weekend, Netradyne will be joined by customer leaders who represent some of the most respected safety cultures in transportation.
Knight-Swift Transportation, the largest full truckload carrier in North America, equips all 15,500 trucks across its Knight and Swift fleets with the Netradyne platform, which allows the team to take a constructive approach when coaching drivers.
"As safety professionals, we can talk about all the things you do well and things we continue to improve, and we celebrate with our drivers," says Jules Miller, VP of Safety. "You can really tell both sides of the story and that's something that our drivers really appreciate about this system."
Prime Inc., a leading North American transportation carrier managing more than7,200 vehicles, began its Netradyne partnership focused on driver trust, transparency, and privacy. Working closely with drivers to explain how the technology would enhance safety and operations, Prime built not only a strong safety culture, but a high-performing one. Since implementation, Prime has achieved GreenZone scores consistently exceeding 900 across their fleet
"We don’t look for vendors, we look for partners. And Netradyne has truly been that for us,” says BrianneMadura, Assistant Director of IT at Prime, Inc.
Boyle Transportation is trusted to move sensitive military cargo and life-saving pharmaceutical products, and it’s built one of the industry's strongest safety records. The company hasn’t experienced a preventable recordable accident since2019.
"Our average cost per accident is below $1,000 because our drivers are alert and bring their A-game," says Michael Lasko, Assistant General Manager and Vice President of EHS and Quality.
The data speaks for itself. Out of a possible 1,000 points, Boyle Transportation’s average GreenZone score is 985, or 100 points higher than the average fleet. Considering that every 50-point improvement correlates to a 13–15% reduction in accidents per million miles, it’s no surprise that Boyle’s average cost per accident is so low.
These organizations have embedded safety into how they operate every day. And the payoff? It’s showing up in a big way across driver engagement, operational costs, customer confidence, and long-term performance.
Why safe and fast are the same thing
The transportation industry has spent years wrestling with a misconception that safety programs create friction and slow operations down.
The fleets leading the industry today are proving the opposite.
When organizations can see 100% of drive time, deliver coaching in real time, and recognize drivers for positive behaviors, performance improves across the board.
Netradyne built its GreenZone® Score around that philosophy, measuring driving performance using a complete view of behavior to create amore accurate picture of risk and improvement opportunities. Data shows that a 10-point increase in GreenZone score correlates with approximately 5–6% better fuel efficiency.
In other words, the safety score is also an efficiency score.
Road Intelligence adds another layer of context by accounting for factors such as roadway type and traffic conditions. This makes coaching more personalized and accurate because safety managers can evaluate drivers based on their real-time environment.
Recognition plays an equally important role. Drivers who receive regular positive reinforcement engage more with coaching programs and improvement initiatives. Organizations that balance accountability with recognition create stronger participation and stronger results.
Boyle Transportation is a great example of this. Their drivers actively compete with each other using GreenZone scores. “They like that they can look into it, see how they rank among their peers, and see the areas they can improve to get to the next level,” says Lasko.
Drivers make decisions every mile. The fleets that consistently outperform their peers provide those drivers with the tools, feedback, and recognition needed to make the right decision more often.
San Diego, race weekend, and what this moment means
This weekend's NASCAR event carries special significance for Netradyne.
San Diego is home to our headquarters and the community where much of our innovation journey began. Bringing together fleet leaders, customers, partners, and team members in our home market creates an opportunity to celebrate the people driving safety forward across the industry.
Throughout the weekend, we'll be sharing customer stories, executive perspectives from leaders at fleets likeKnight-Swift, Prime, and Boyle Transportation, and of course, behind-the-scenes race-day content across our social channels.
The safest fleets play to win
Organizations that sustain elite performance under pressure rarely get there by chance.
They build systems that improve decision-making, invest in cultures that recognize excellence, and create feedback loops that help people adapt and improve every day.
The safest fleets aren't playing it safe. They're playing to win.
Follow along this weekend on LinkedIn as we go trackside with some of the best fleets in the business and explore what it takes to perform at the highest level—both on the racetrack and on the road.
