Women Driving What’s Next

I’ve been in transportation for more than 20 years, and one thing is clear: this industry is full of people who refuse to stay in their lane—in the best way possible. It’s about grit, problem-solving, and moving communities forward. And right now, it’s about women leading the charge.
As we wrap up our Women in Motion series, I’m thrilled to spotlight two incredible women breaking barriers at the very top. Karen Smerchek, President of Veriha, and Samantha Bodnar, President of D.M. Bowman, are not just leading their companies—they’re shaping the future of transportation. From operations to culture, and innovation to mentorship, their work proves this industry thrives when women take the wheel.
For me, transportation has always been more than trucks and logistics. It’s the unseen work, the connections, and the opportunities to lift others up. Seeing Karen and Samantha in action reminds me how powerful a diverse, bold, and collaborative industry can be. Together, we’re moving ideas, careers, and communities forward.

Behind Every Mile
Karen often reminds me how much coordination, problem-solving, and care goes into keeping transportation moving. “Transportation isn’t just trucks moving from point A to point B. It’s people working together to keep communities stocked, businesses running, and families supported,” she says.
Samantha adds, “Every day brings new challenges—weather, traffic, equipment issues, or changes in customer needs. Teams have to adapt quickly. Communication, organization, and problem-solving are essential to keeping things moving.”
For me, there’s another layer: the unseen “magic” of connecting people, ideas, and opportunities. The introductions that spark solutions. The moments that elevate colleagues and customers alike. Often, the greatest impact happens where no one is looking—and that’s what makes this work so rewarding.
Leading the Conversation
Karen believes the industry can better recognize and retain women by making their contributions visible and supporting their growth. “Clear paths for advancement, strong mentorship, and workplaces where respect and safety are non-negotiable make all the difference. When women see opportunities for leadership, it inspires others to step forward.”
Samantha stresses that flexible, supportive workplaces benefit everyone—not just women. “Transportation can be demanding. Companies that focus on flexibility, fair pay, and growth opportunities retain talented people. Highlighting women in leadership roles shows what’s possible.”
For me, creating space often starts with awareness. Sometimes, it’s as simple—and as powerful—as asking whose voice is missing. I think of the “Never Without Her” campaign in Europe, where colleagues committed to never hold an important meeting without a woman’s voice. Small actions like that can shift culture, spark ideas, and elevate leadership.
Breaking the Stereotype
Karen challenges outdated assumptions about women in hands-on transportation roles. “Women bring resilience, professionalism, attention to detail, strong communication, and leadership every day. Success isn’t about fitting a stereotype—it’s about skill, commitment, and the ability to adapt and solve problems.”
Samantha agrees: “You don’t need a transportation background to succeed. You learn quickly—and then grow over a lifetime of experience. Being willing to learn and adapt is what makes someone successful.”
For me, it’s about perspective. It’s not about being a woman in transportation—it’s about being an essential voice in a complex ecosystem. Every perspective strengthens teams and drives innovation. Tools like Netradyne’s AI-driven driver visibility solutions are helping elevate those voices and create safer, smarter operations—proving technology and leadership go hand in hand.
Your Voice Belongs Here
Karen encourages young women to pursue transportation with confidence. “Don’t let outdated assumptions or imposter syndrome hit the brakes. Find mentors, ask questions, and believe you belong in the room and the role.”
Samantha stresses staying open-minded: “These are rewarding careers that play a vital role in keeping communities and the economy moving. You might be surprised at how much you enjoy it.”
My advice? Expect challenges, but also expect growth. Seek out mentors, peers, and unexpected guides who shape your journey. Show up fully, be yourself, and remember: your voice matters. The work you do today can inspire change, elevate others, and move the entire industry forward.
Moving Forward
Women have always helped keep the world moving—even when that work hasn’t been visible. This Women’s History Month, we celebrate that impact—but recognition shouldn’t stop here.
The future of transportation is bright, diverse, and full of opportunity. Netradyne is proud to support women leaders and innovate alongside them, ensuring safety, efficiency, and growth across the industry.
