By midafternoon, John was feeling the full weight of the heat. The pavement shimmered, the stops kept stacking up, and the cab never stayed cool for long. At first, the warning signs seemed easy to dismiss: a headache, heavy sweating, irritability, and a brief wave of dizziness at an intersection. Then, approaching a work zone, John missed a slowing vehicle and nearly rear-ended it. His manager, Jerry, saw the collision warning, called John, and noticed he sounded confused. Jerry directed him to pull into a shaded parking area while operations paused the route, got John cooled down, hydrated, medically evaluated, and reassigned the remaining stops.
